Do not get discouraged if you get a note from your insurance company saying that your insurance claim is being denied. There are certain things you still can do to protect your hard earned savings from being taken by insurance companies when you know that your premiums are paid every month out of your pocket.

Make sure that you read your insurance policy handbook or insurance contract, a document that was provided to you by your insurance company independently or though your employer. Get familiar with what is covered and what is not. Your policy should have a procedure in place about how to appeal a claim, so you want to follow this procedure in the exact way it says. Check how many days you have to appeal a claim.

Gather all necessary information. If you have contacted an insurance agent in the past about a matter that has to do with your claim, then gather names, dates and notes on this conversation. Fill out an insurance appeal form precisely. This should include the date and the place of the treatment or occasion. The reasons for the insurance claim appeal could vary: you were misinformed by an insurance representative on coverage, or you received a bill for a medical treatment or your medication cost turned out to be more than you thought it should. In any case, fill out your form and keep one copy for yourself. Send out your claim, a denial note and all other proof along by a certified letter. Wait about ten days and you should receive a note that your claim is being received. If your insurance is provided by your employer, then contact your human resources department – they may have all the contact information and specific phone numbers just to speed up the appeal process.

If your claim comes back to you with a note of denial, look over it and do the necessary changes. Sometimes insurance agencies are not sure on type of treatment you received. Your doctor can give you the codes on your treatment which you can include on your form. This and other information will be used to sort out your claim to a correct department in insurance company and make their job easier.

If your insurance still denies your appeal and you disagree, you may contact local insurance authorities, such as your state’s insurance department. Every state has a department that can help you with guiding you though the process and they are able to inform you on the options you have available about your claim. For example, they can advice you on starting a procedure, called independent external review.

You could also negotiate your bill with your doctor. You can ask your doctor for a discount on their medical services. Do not ask insurance agencies for discounts, they do not handle those kinds of issues.
